On October 21, 2024, Mayor Ward Stamer announced that he was stepping down from his role as Mayor after his successful election as MLA - Kamloops North Thompson. In accordance with section 54 of the Local Government Act, an election must be held as soon as practicable when a vacancy occurs in an elected government office.

Also in accordance to the Local Government Act, a member of Council that wishes to run for a vacated Mayor seat in a By-Election, must step down within 14 calendar days after Council appoints a Chief Election Officer. Acting Mayor, Councillor Rob Kerslake, has formally announced his intention to run for the position of Mayor in the 2025 By-Election. He is scheduled to officially step-down as legislatively required by December 30, 2024. This will result in a Councillor seat vacancy.

For questions regarding this legislative process, please contact the Chief Election Officer, Tasha Buchanan, at (250) 672-9751 or email: tbuchanan@barriere.ca or Daniel Drexler, Deputy Chief Election Officer: ddrexler@barriere.ca
