For more information about the District of Barriere Garbage/Recycling Pickup Schedule, please call the District Office at 250-672-9751
Recycling is collected on an alternating week schedule. Paper products (in yellow) one week, and Containers (in blue) the next. If you need clarification on what can and cannot be included in your curbside recycling collection, it is recommended you contact the District Office at (250) 672-9751.
- Garbage/recycling must be placed curbside before 7:00 a.m. on your pick up day to ensure pick up.
- Please note - that while your garbage may be collected around the same time each week, many factors (such as weather, staffing issues, vehicle/equipment issues, etc.) can vary this timing. While you may choose to place your garbage curbside closer to the time the driver usually comes by, there is a risk that due to unavoidable factors, the timing may not align with your timing expectation and you could miss the truck's pass through. In order to ensure pick-up, it is recommended to have your garbage & recycling placed at the curb by 7am.
- Living in rural areas such as Barriere comes with living alongside wildlife. Putting your garbage out the evening before, or not placing it inside a regulation sized garbage can with a lid, can draw in wildlife such as bears, coyotes, rats and other animals who may appreciate the buffet. Not only does this scenario pose a threat to the animals themselves, but can pose a safety issue to the neighbourhood's residents & pets. In addition, the mess they inevitably will make, is the responsibility of the homeowner to clean up should animals, birds, rats, etc. not clean up after themselves. Solid Waste Collection staff are not permitted to collect loose material.
Please Don't Feed the: Bear, Coyotes, Crows, Rats, Skunk, Squirrels, Dogs, Cats, etc. It's bad for them and our neighbourhoods!

- One regulation sized garbage container OR two garbage bags inside one regulation size container, per household/week are permitted.
- $1.00 fee per extra garbage bag will apply. Pre-paid vouchers for the extra $1.00 fee are available for purchase at the District Office.
Recycling is to be placed in a District approved Recycling Tote. More information on this program can be found by viewing the Recycling Information Page. Alternatively, contact the District Office for any clarifications/questions regarding recycling or approved recycling containers - 250-672-9751.
Recycling bins for large pieces of cardboard are located next to the Fire Hall. **CORROGATED CARDBOARD MUST NOT BE PLACED IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD GARBAGE** - As of July 1, 2021, the TNRD no longer accepts cardboard in residential waste. It MUST be recycled. Large pieces of flattened cardboard can either be brought to the designated bins located by the Fire Hall, or to the Eco Depot directly. There is no charge for cardboard disposal.
Thank you for supporting the District's recycling initiatives.
The TNRD ECO DEPOT is located at 4077 Agate Bay Road (Louis Creek Mill site). Winter hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 8am-4pm. Summer hours are Tuesday through Sunday 8am-4pm View the Landfill Eco-Depot document below for more information including, fees and rates.
TNRD Eco Cards for those using the Eco Depot Site directly (material not collected curbside or for those living outside of the municipal boundary)
HOW DO I KNOW IF AN ITEM I HAVE IS RECYCLABLE?
To find out if an item is eligible for curbside collection, refer to the back of your garbage/recycling calendar card sent to you each year in June. Alternatively, you can refer to the posters displayed on this webpage or call the District Office directly for clarification (250) 672-9751. Hazardous Waste is not permitted in curbside garbage OR recycling. Please bring these items up to the Louis Creek Eco-Depot directly. Batteries can be brought to the District Office for free recycling if packaged properly (bound by elastics or tape so ends don't touch).
To find out if an item is accepted at the Louis Creek Eco-Depot (garbage, construction materials, recycling, hazardous waste, furniture, yard waste, etc.) you can visit the TNRD's website here: https://www.tnrd.ca/facility/louis-creek-barriere-eco-depot/ and click on "Accepted Materials". You can also use your internet's search engine "TNRD Louis Creek Eco-Depot" to bring up the page.
I KNOW THIS ITEM IS RECYCLABLE, SO WHY CAN'T I PUT IT IN MY RECYCLING TOTE?
The District of Barriere is the authorized contractor of Recycle BC for curbside recycling collection. Recycle BC is a provincially regulated body and each collector is bound to service contracts on what can and can not be collected curbside. The regulations are strictly enforced by Recycle BC. At present, the two streams the District is able to collect curbside are Paper/Box Board and Plastic/Metal & Coated Paper Containers. Items such as Glass, Styrofoam (colored or white), plastic film and large pieces of corrugated cardboard, are all accepted FREE of charge at the TNRD Louis Creek Eco-Depot. Recycle BC only permits the collection of recyclable household printed paper & packaging. Recyclable "products", i.e. Lego, plastic dishware, Tupperware, electronics, bins, toys, etc. are NOT accepted by Recycle BC and therefore not eligible for curbside recycling pick-up by the District.
There’s 2 categories but only one tote. Shouldn’t we have 2 totes?
Residents can continue with whatever method they are using now to separate the 2 categories inside the home. Many are using bags as multiple totes take up a lot of room. If a resident is using two hanging bags to sort, for example, they can continue to do so and simply empty the bag into the clear tote on collection day and rehang the bag for re-use. However, if a resident wishes to have 2 totes, there are some available for purchase at the District office or another clear tote of the same or similar size can be purchased privately and used. Contact the District to confirm your private tote/bin specifications are permitted.
Do I have to use the tote provided by the District or can I use something else?
The tote provided is clear and an approved size for curbside collection, so it is recommended to use that tote to guarantee collection. If residents wish to use an additional or alternative container, it should be clear, an approved size and display the recycling logo/sticker which can be purchased at the District Office. Other specifications may also be required so residents wishing to use an additional or alternative container will need to contact the District office. A reminder: Under the District's contract with RecycleBC, collection staff are not able to collect recycling from single-use plastic bags. Additional clear totes are available for purchase (at cost) at the District Office.
Can’t I just put my blue bag out curbside and the collector just empty it into the collection vehicle?
Unfortunately, no. Recycle BC regulations do no permit that arrangement.
What am I supposed to do with the blue bags that I have already purchased?
Blue bags can continue to be used for recycling material until the last collection day in June. As of July 1st, 2020, recycling must be placed for collection inside the tote provided. However, after that date, blue bags can be used for non-recyclables disposal such as household garbage or yard waste.
Is there any change to what materials are and are not allowed to be collected curbside?
Corrugated cardboard is now not accepted by the TNRD in household garbage. This material MUST be recycled. Please flatten your corrugated cardboard and drop it off in the bins provided in various locations around town (i.e. beside the Fire Hall, Business Centre (BBC), Liquor Store and on Power Road). Alternatively, you can bring it up to the Louis Creek Eco-Depot for free disposal. Large amounts of Styrofoam also must be recycled by dropping it off directly at the Eco-Depot in Louis Creek for no-charge.
